Cauliflower,peppers and broccoli

After a long-ish hiatus, I'm back with these lovely summer vegetables. I've also discover the joys of juicing, so any fruits and vegetables you see in the future will give their lives to my art and then my GI system. It's been raining buckets here lately, so I've been driven indoors to paint and practice harp. If there is more time in between paintings, you can guess that I'm playing in the dirt outside, or actually working doing medical illustrations.

Golden Plums and Figs

I love painting and eating figs. They need special winter attention, but they can be grown here in zone 6. I might have to try one tree. They also have lovely leaves that are worthy of painting.

Waterlily Pond

This is a lovely cool waterlily pond that brings back good memories for me. I can see why Monet was so enamored of his. I wish I had more sun on my pond to grow them.

NJ Beach

Here's an appropriate summer scene. I'm using my small left-over pieces of canvas. Pieces that are smaller than 5"x7" get thrown away so I don't end up on TV and buried in tiny canvases.

Clementines

Orange Tulips in a Silver Teapot

I did this one back in April. Tulips are so tricky to paint because they keep growing, even after they are cut, and they bend unpredictably. This all happens within a couple of hours of the initial set up, so speed is your friend. Still, I love to paint them because of their vivid colors and elegantly simple shapes. It's a shame their season is so short.

Stover Mill Barn

Yet another red barn. Can you stand it? It was a gray day on Friday, and I think it was mizzling when I painted this. Next week, I'll stay inside and paint still life again. Any requests?

Barn Again

This is a small study that I did just before the rain moved in. As you will see in subsequent posts, Buck County is chocked full of red barns. I think residents must get a discount on the red paint; must find out where.

Barn in the Woods

We painted on the beautiful Willoughby Farm in Pipersville, Bucks Co. You can't see them, but there are about 35,789 gnats flying around in the foreground. I'm getting better at massing my colors; painting the forest and not the trees. I started another little painting and will post it after I finish and photograph it.

Cuttalossa Cabin

Yet another day that started out overcast, but brightened up as the day progressed. Cuttalossa Creek is one of the tiny creeks in eastern Bucks Co. that runs into the Delaware River. This building was part of Daniel Garber's estate and is so gorgeous, I nearly passed out several times from its beauty. There are smiling Doll Sheep, chickens, and a few geese to add charisma to this site. I took plenty of sheep photos, so look for them in the future.

Stone Barn, Hot Afternoon

This is from my first day at Bob Rohm's  landscape workshop. It was a hot bright afternoon, and I think that comes across. If it doesn't, I can post photos of my feet with my gladiator sandal pattern burned into them. (Note to self: put sunscreen on feet.)

A Cup of Blue Nikko

This painting is one of the "Lee" sisters: Fug-lee, I think. Just goes to show, I can't paint a pretty picture every time, but I at least learned something about simplifying all those little flowers. I did have a great afternoon with my Dad and we figured it was the first Father's Day in 25 years that we'd been together. That alone was worth whatever ugly painting I cranked out.

Coming Apart

I painted this the first week of April, but it didn't have enough paint and there were too many drawing mistakes, so I put it away. I repainted it Friday night and yesterday with much better results. Now, to figure out a good consistent way to photograph these little guys.

Well, it's Saturday, and I have spent most of the day attending a friend's Bar Mitzvah. I almost finished a painting last night and will try to finish that this evening so I can post it for tomorrow. In the meantime, happy summer Saturday to you all.

The Barn and beyond

This is one of my efforts from the Plein Aire painting I did yesterday at the Updike Farmstead in Princeton, NJ. First, this is a beautiful farm that was donated to the Historic Society of Princeton, and the house has been beautifully restored. Brett Weaver's landscapes are on display there. The day was bright, but overcast, so dramatic shadows were hard to come by. Take home message from the day: use more paint and simplify!

Eggs and shells

I did this 5" X 7" painting 2 months ago, but finished it yesterday. I keep chickens who lay pink, green, blue and white eggs, so I like to put these beautiful eggs in paintings. I'm off to Princeton today to do some landscape painting. I'll post my efforts in the next few days.

Warm Roses

Here is my first effort at flowers. Because the petals are translucent, the technique for painting them is different from painting opaque objects. I'll work on this.

Meanwhile, back in the studio, I'm gearing up for some daily painting this summer by organizing and rearranging different areas of the studio. My puppy, Jasper, has other ideas. He thinks the contents of the paper recycling would look better as a floor covering.
